The Impact of Language upon Culture

Do the languages we speak shape the way we think? Do they merely express thoughts, or do the structures in languages, without our knowledge or consent, shape the very thoughts we wish to express?

Take "Humpty Dumpty sat on a..." Even this snippet of a nursery rhyme reveals how much languages can differ from one another. In English, we have to mark the verb for tense. In this case we say "sat" rather than "sit", and there is no way to stay neutral about when it happened.

In Indonesian you do not have to mark tense at all. The verb stays the same whether the sitting happened yesterday, happens now or will happen tomorrow. Time gets expressed only when the speaker decides it matters.

In Russian you would have to mark tense and also gender, changing the verb if Mrs Dumpty did the sitting. You would also have to decide whether the sitting event was completed or not. If our ovoid hero sat on the wall for the entire time he was meant to, it would be a different form of the verb than if, say, he had a great fall.

In Turkish you would have to include in the verb how you acquired the information. If you saw the chubby fellow on the wall with your own eyes, you would use one form. If you had simply read or heard about it, you would use a different one. The grammar makes you show your sources.

Four languages, four sets of compulsory questions

The point is not that one language can say things another cannot. Any language can express any idea, given enough words. The point is what each language forces you to decide before you can finish a sentence. English demands a decision about time. Russian demands time, grammatical gender and completion. Turkish demands a decision about evidence.

So do English, Indonesian, Russian and Turkish speakers end up attending to, understanding and remembering their experiences differently simply because they speak different languages? These questions touch on all the major controversies in the study of mind, with implications for politics, law and religion. A courtroom that runs in a language with obligatory evidentiality puts a grammatical marker on the difference between what a witness saw and what a witness was told.

From heresy to laboratory

Very little empirical work had been done on these questions until recently. The idea that language might shape thought was for a long time considered untestable at best, and more often simply crazy and wrong. The strong version of linguistic relativity, which held that language determines thought and traps speakers inside it, collapsed under its own overreach in the middle of the twentieth century. Generations of students were taught the sapir whorf hypothesis mainly as a cautionary tale about bad science.

Then the experiments arrived. A flurry of cognitive science research is showing that language does profoundly influence how we see the world. The new work is careful in a way the old work was not. It does not claim that a Russian speaker cannot conceive of an uncompleted action, or that an Indonesian speaker has no sense of yesterday. It measures smaller, testable effects: how quickly people sort colours, how they remember who caused an accident, how they lay out time when asked to arrange pictures in order.

What the experiments actually show

Speakers of languages that mark aspect obsessively tend to be quicker at judging whether an action in a video was finished. Speakers of languages that use compass directions rather than left and right, such as Guugu Yimithirr in northern Queensland, stay oriented in unfamiliar buildings in ways that leave English speakers baffled. Assign a gender to an object in a language that has grammatical gender and speakers reach for adjectives that match it, calling a bridge elegant in one language and sturdy in another.

These are not enormous effects. They are consistent ones, and they survive replication, which is more than can be said for a lot of results in psychology. Researchers argue the boundaries of the findings constantly, and anyone who wants to watch the argument in real time can find it on forums such as r/cogsci, where every new relativity paper gets picked apart within a day.

Where the effects show up in daily life

The consequences are easiest to see where precision carries a penalty. Accident reports are a standard example. English speakers describing a broken vase tend to say who broke it, even when the breaking was clearly an accident, because English agent-focused syntax invites a culprit. Speakers of languages that prefer a non-agentive construction, closer to "the vase broke itself", remember the person involved less reliably in later memory tests. Insurers, police officers and courts all rely on witness accounts produced under exactly these grammatical pressures.

None of that makes one language better at truth-telling than another. It means the shape of a sentence quietly nudges what a speaker notices and what a listener retains, and that the nudge is measurable.

Why translators knew this first

People who move meaning between languages for a living have never needed convincing. A translator working from Turkish into English has to decide what to do with a verb form that carries no English equivalent. Drop the evidential marker and the English reads confidently, which may be exactly what the original did not do. Keep it and you have to add words the author never wrote.

The same pressure applies to cultural differences that hide in ordinary vocabulary: kinship terms that split cousins by side of the family, politeness levels that encode the speaker's status, emotion words with no clean counterpart. The answer to the original question is turning out to be a qualified yes. Language does not build a cage around thought. It builds a set of habits, and habits are what people mistake for the world.
